Oral Cancer Screening

At Walton Dental Surgery your dental check–up plays an important part in early detection of oral cancer. An oral cancer check forms part of your routine visit.

Tissue changes in the mouth can often be felt and seen by your dentist. They will examine your whole mouth, checking your lips, cheeks, tongue, roof of your mouth and throat. Depending on what they see, you may need further monitoring or to be seen by a specialist.

Oral cancer can occur in any part of the mouth. Around 4000 new cases are reported each year. Oral cancer represents about 1% of all cancers in the UK with numbers increasing every year.

Oral cancer is curable, small cancers are easily treatable. It is important that the condition is diagnosed and treated early. Treatment is usually radiotherapy or surgery. If the cancer is extensive, mouth reconstruction may be necessary.
Severe cases of oral cancer can spread and prove fatal.

The British Dental Association has calculated that if cancers are detected early the chances of surviving for 5 years or more is 80%, compared to the average of 50%
